Henna as a Tool for Transformation & Self-Discovery
Henna, a plant-based dye, has a rich history that spans many centuries and continents, originating in ancient Egypt and spreading throughout Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Traditionally, henna has been used in various ways: as a cosmetic, for medicinal purposes, and to celebrate life’s most meaningful moments. Across cultures, henna is applied during religious festivals such as Eid and Diwali, at weddings, and other significant gatherings. Henna art is more than temporary body decoration. It is a medium for transformation that brings people together to celebrate change, both on a personal and communal level. Its unique ability to adapt and evolve allows diverse forms of expression to emerge.
“My work combines African and Indian iconography within my henna designs, weaving together elements of both heritage and contemporary interpretation. In doing so, I aim to honour henna’s history while redefining its cultural significance for a new generation.
I explore the themes of masking and self-expression,through my henna art. I mark the start of each new journey with intention using henna to explore the beauty in change, and to embrace each new layer of myself. Each design represents who I need to be in that season or phase of life—a temporary layer of who I am, slowly fading with time, allowing me to reflect on my journey of transformation.
As it fades, I am reminded that growth requires us to shed layers we no longer need. This practice not only helps me connect more deeply with my body, but it also honors the process of transformation—a cycle of becoming, releasing, and meeting the person I have always been beneath the layers.
